US Navy Aviation Ratings: Aviation Structural Mechanic Structures (AMS)

In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, an Aviation Structural Mechanic (Structures), or AMS, was responsible for inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and replacing the aircraft’s structural and mechanical components to keep it safe and ready for flight.

AMS personnel worked on the A-6’s aluminum skin, frames, bulkheads, longerons, flight-control surfaces, doors, panels, canopies, and other structural assemblies; repaired cracks, corrosion, dents, and battle or handling damage; fabricated and installed sheet-metal patches and replacement parts using riveting, drilling, cutting, forming, and precision measuring techniques; inspected and repaired hydraulic and pneumatic systems; serviced and repaired landing gear, brakes, wheels, tires, and related components; maintained flight-control mechanisms and hydraulic actuators; performed corrosion prevention and treatment; inspected structural areas during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance; assisted with aircraft jacking, lifting, and structural inspections; maintained maintenance records; and performed troubleshooting and repairs in accordance with Navy maintenance manuals and the Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP).

In an operational A-6 squadron, the AMS shop was a critical part of the Maintenance Department, working alongside other aviation ratings to keep the squadron’s A-6A, A-6E, and KA-6D aircraft mission-capable both ashore and aboard aircraft carriers.

US Navy Aviation Ratings: Aviation Structural Mechanic Hydraulics (AMH)

In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, an Aviation Structural Mechanic (Hydraulics), or AMH, was responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, servicing, maintaining, and repairing the aircraft’s hydraulic and related mechanical systems to keep the A-6 safe and mission-ready.

AMH personnel maintained hydraulic pumps, reservoirs, accumulators, actuators, valves, regulators, filters, tubing, hoses, fittings, and associated components; serviced and repaired landing gear, nose-wheel steering, wheel and brake systems, arresting hooks, wing-fold mechanisms, speed brakes, and hydraulically operated flight-control systems; checked hydraulic systems for leaks, contamination, proper pressure, and correct operation; removed, installed, and functionally tested hydraulic components; fabricated and replaced hydraulic lines and fittings; serviced hydraulic reservoirs and performed system bleeding and flushing; inspected tires, wheels, brakes, struts, and landing-gear assemblies; operated hydraulic test stands and other support equipment; assisted with aircraft jacking and landing-gear maintenance; performed scheduled and unscheduled inspections; documented maintenance actions; and followed the Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP), technical manuals, and applicable safety procedures.

In an A-6A, A-6E, or KA-6D squadron, AMHs worked within the Maintenance Department alongside other aviation ratings to troubleshoot discrepancies and return aircraft to full mission-capable status both ashore and aboard aircraft carriers.

On March 1, 2001, the AMH (Aviation Structural Mechanic, Hydraulics) and AMS (Aviation Structural Mechanic, Structures) ratings officially merged into the single Aviation Structural Mechanic (AM) rating

US Navy Aviation Ratings: Aviation Machinist’s Mate (AD)

In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, an Aviation Machinist’s Mate (AD) was an aircraft engine mechanic responsible for inspecting, servicing, troubleshooting, maintaining, removing, installing, and repairing the A-6’s two Pratt & Whitney J52 turbojet engines and their associated systems.

AD personnel performed scheduled and unscheduled engine inspections; conducted preflight, postflight, turnaround, and special inspections as assigned; serviced engine oil systems; inspected compressors, turbines, combustion sections, exhaust components, fuel controls, pumps, filters, lines, fittings, and engine-mounted accessories; diagnosed abnormal temperatures, pressures, vibration, oil consumption, leaks, and loss of thrust; performed engine preservation and corrosion-control procedures; removed and replaced defective components; assisted with engine changes and transported, installed, and secured replacement engines; performed engine ground runs and operational checks; inspected engine bays, mounts, connections, and related components; maintained tools and support equipment; documented discrepancies, repairs, inspections, and component changes in aircraft maintenance records; and followed Navy technical publications, safety procedures, and the Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP).

Working as part of the squadron Maintenance Department, ADs were essential to keeping the A-6A, A-6E, and KA-6D Intruder’s J52 engines reliable and mission-ready during demanding flight operations both ashore and aboard aircraft carriers.

The U.S. Navy merged the specialized engine ratings ADR (Aviation Machinist’s Mate, Reciprocating Engine Mechanic) and ADJ (Aviation Machinist’s Mate, Jet Engine Mechanic) back into the single generalized AD (Aviation Machinist’s Mate) rating during the mid-1970s

US Navy Aviation Ratings: US Navy Aviation Ratings Equipment (AME)

In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, an Aviation Structural Mechanic (Safety Equipment), or AME, was responsible for inspecting, servicing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing aircraft systems designed to protect the pilot and bombardier/navigator during normal operations and emergencies.

AME personnel maintained the A-6’s Martin-Baker GRU-7 ejection seats and associated ejection-system components; inspected and serviced seat firing mechanisms, cartridges and cartridge-actuated devices (CADs), initiators, sequencing components, harness and restraint systems, survival equipment, and emergency-release mechanisms; maintained the canopy and canopy-jettison system; inspected and serviced crew oxygen systems, regulators, hoses, masks, fittings, and related components; maintained cockpit pressurization, air-conditioning, ventilation, and environmental-control equipment within their assigned responsibilities; removed and installed ejection seats for scheduled inspections and maintenance; performed safety pinning and de-arming procedures before maintenance; checked components for damage, corrosion, expiration dates, and proper operation; maintained detailed inspection and maintenance records; and followed strict Navy technical manuals, explosive-safety requirements, and Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) procedures.

In an A-6A, A-6E, or KA-6D Intruder squadron, AMEs performed one of the Maintenance Department’s most safety-critical jobs, ensuring that the aircraft’s aircrew life-support and emergency-escape systems were ready to function correctly when needed. Aircrew Survival Equipmentman (PR)

In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, an Aircrew Survival Equipmentman (PR), commonly called a “Parachute Rigger,” was responsible for inspecting, maintaining, repairing, packing, and documenting the personal survival and life-support equipment used by the pilot and bombardier/navigator.

PR personnel inspected, repaired, and packed parachute assemblies; maintained survival vests, life preservers, flotation equipment, survival kits, signaling devices, emergency radios, protective clothing, flight gear, harnesses, and related aircrew equipment; inspected fabric, webbing, stitching, fasteners, hardware, and inflatable components for wear or damage; performed sewing and fabric repairs using specialized equipment; inspected and serviced oxygen masks and associated personal flight equipment within assigned responsibilities; maintained and fitted helmets and other aircrew protective equipment; ensured survival equipment was properly configured for specific missions and operating environments; tracked inspection intervals and service-life requirements; maintained detailed equipment and maintenance records; and followed Navy technical publications, safety requirements, and Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) procedures.

In an A-6A, A-6E, or KA-6D Intruder squadron, PRs worked closely with aircrews and AME personnel to ensure that every aviator’s personal survival equipment was correctly fitted, properly maintained, and ready for immediate use during carrier operations, combat missions, over-water flights, or an aircraft emergency.

US Navy Aviation Ratings: Aviation Electrician’s Mates (AE)


In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, an Aviation Electrician’s Mate (AE) was responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, and testing the aircraft’s electrical power and electrically operated systems to keep the A-6 safe and mission-ready.

AE personnel maintained generators, alternators, transformers, rectifiers, batteries, voltage regulators, circuit breakers, relays, switches, electrical control units, wiring harnesses, connectors, junction boxes, lighting systems, and associated electrical components; troubleshot open circuits, short circuits, grounds, intermittent faults, and abnormal voltage or current conditions using multimeters and specialized test equipment; repaired and replaced damaged wiring, terminals, connectors, relays, switches, and electrical components; maintained aircraft exterior and interior lighting, warning and indicating circuits, electrical portions of engine and fuel systems, and electrical controls associated with landing gear, flight controls, wing-fold, and other aircraft systems within the rating’s assigned responsibilities; performed continuity, resistance, insulation, voltage, and operational checks; removed, installed, and tested electrical equipment; assisted in troubleshooting electrical problems that crossed into avionics and mechanical systems; performed scheduled, special, and unscheduled inspections; maintained aircraft maintenance records; and followed Navy technical publications, electrical safety procedures, and Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) requirements.

In an A-6A, A-6E, or KA-6D Intruder squadron, AEs worked closely with ATs and other Maintenance Department personnel to keep the aircraft’s complex electrical systems functioning reliably during demanding flight operations ashore and aboard aircraft carriers.

US Navy Aviation Ratings: Aviation Electronics Technician (AT)

In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, an Aviation Electronics Technician (AT) was responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, testing, maintaining, repairing, removing, and installing the aircraft’s sophisticated avionics and electronic systems that allowed the pilot and bombardier/navigator (B/N) to navigate, communicate, detect targets, deliver weapons, and operate in all-weather conditions.

AT personnel maintained the A-6’s navigation, communications, radar, electronic warfare, identification, instrumentation, and weapons-related electronic equipment within their assigned responsibilities; troubleshot radar displays, antennas, transmitters, receivers, computers, navigation equipment, radios, intercommunication systems, radar-warning equipment, electronic countermeasures, and associated wiring and components; used multimeters, oscilloscopes, electronic test sets, and specialized avionics support equipment to isolate faults; removed and replaced defective line-replaceable units, circuit cards, modules, antennas, cables, connectors, and electronic assemblies; performed operational, functional, continuity, and system checks; assisted with troubleshooting electrical and avionics discrepancies that crossed rating responsibilities; conducted scheduled, special, and unscheduled inspections; supported aircraft launch, recovery, turnaround, and night flight operations; maintained avionics test equipment and maintenance records; and followed Navy technical publications, electrical safety requirements, and Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) procedures.

In an A-6A, A-6E, or KA-6D Intruder squadron, ATs were particularly important because the Intruder depended heavily on its integrated electronic systems for low-level, day-or-night, all-weather attack missions, making avionics maintenance essential to keeping the aircraft combat-ready.

US Navy Aviation Ratings: Aviation Fire Control (AQ)

In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, an Aviation Fire Control Technician (AQ) was responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, testing, maintaining, repairing, removing, and installing the electronic equipment associated with the aircraft’s attack, navigation, and weapons-delivery systems.

AQ personnel worked extensively with the A-6E Intruder’s Digital Integrated Attack/Navigation Equipment (DIANE) and related fire-control equipment, including attack computers, radar and weapons-control interfaces, displays, indicators, sensors, control panels, electronic modules, wiring, connectors, and associated test equipment; diagnosed electronic faults using specialized test sets, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other electronic troubleshooting equipment; removed and replaced defective line-replaceable units, circuit cards, modules, and components; performed system alignment, calibration, functional checks, and operational tests; maintained electronic interfaces between the aircraft’s attack computer, radar, navigation equipment, and weapons systems; assisted in troubleshooting discrepancies reported by the pilot and bombardier/navigator (B/N); supported weapons-system checks before launches and after maintenance; performed scheduled, special, and unscheduled inspections; maintained maintenance records and test equipment; and followed Navy technical publications, electrical and ordnance safety requirements, and Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) procedures.

In an A-6E Intruder squadron, AQs played a critical role in maintaining the complex electronic attack and fire-control systems that gave the Intruder its ability to navigate at low altitude and accurately deliver conventional weapons during day, night, and adverse-weather missions.

Effective 1 January 1991, AQ personnel were converted into the AT rating, consolidating aviation electronics maintenance under Aviation Electronics Technician.

US Navy Aviation Ratings: Aviation Ordnanceman (AO)

In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, an Aviation Ordnanceman (AO) was responsible for inspecting, handling, assembling, loading, downloading, arming, de-arming, maintaining, and accounting for the aircraft weapons and associated ordnance equipment required for each mission.

AO personnel loaded and removed conventional bombs, cluster-type munitions, rockets, missiles, practice ordnance, and other authorized stores carried on the A-6’s five external weapons stations; installed and inspected bomb racks, ejector racks, multiple-ejector racks, missile launchers, adapters, pylons, fuzes, arming wires, cartridges, and other suspension and release equipment; performed electrical and mechanical checks of weapons-release systems within their assigned responsibilities; configured aircraft weapons stations according to mission requirements; inspected ordnance for damage, proper assembly, safety devices, and correct installation; installed and removed safety pins and other devices during aircraft arming and de-arming; troubleshot and maintained aircraft armament and weapons-release components; assisted with weapons loading using bomb hoists, handling equipment, and specialized tools; observed strict explosive-safety procedures while working on the carrier flight deck, hangar deck, and ashore; maintained weapons, ammunition, and maintenance records; and followed Navy weapons-loading manuals, technical publications, Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) procedures, and shipboard explosive-safety requirements.

In an A-6A, A-6E, or KA-6D Intruder squadron, AOs were essential members of the Maintenance Department, preparing attack aircraft for conventional strike missions and ensuring that every weapon and suspension component was correctly configured, safely handled, and ready for reliable delivery.

US Navy Aviation Ratings: Aviation Maintenance Administrationman (AZ)

In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, an Aviation Maintenance Administrationman (AZ) was responsible for the records, reports, data, and administrative systems that supported the squadron’s aircraft maintenance program and documented the readiness of its A-6E and KA-6D aircraft.

AZ personnel maintained aircraft logbooks, maintenance records, inspection schedules, component history records, and technical directive files; processed Maintenance Action Forms (MAFs) and other maintenance documentation; entered, verified, and compiled maintenance data through the Navy’s Maintenance Data System (MDS); tracked aircraft discrepancies, completed maintenance actions, component removals and installations, inspections, flight hours, landings, and equipment operating time; monitored scheduled maintenance requirements and component replacement intervals; prepared aircraft availability, mission-capable, workload, man-hour, and readiness reports; maintained records for technical directives, modifications, and configuration changes; reviewed maintenance documents for accuracy and completeness; maintained files of applicable maintenance instructions and publications; assisted Maintenance Control and work centers with aircraft status and historical maintenance information; compiled statistics used by maintenance supervisors to identify equipment failures and maintenance trends; and followed Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) documentation and recordkeeping requirements.

Working primarily within the squadron Maintenance Department and Maintenance Control organization, AZs provided the accurate maintenance information needed by the Maintenance Officer, Maintenance Control Chief, Quality Assurance, work-center supervisors, and aircrew to determine aircraft status, schedule inspections, manage maintenance workloads, and keep the squadron’s Intruders ready for operations ashore and aboard aircraft carriers.

US Navy Aviation Ratings: The Aviation Storekeeper (AK)


In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, an Aviation Storekeeper (AK) was responsible for managing the aviation parts, supplies, tools, and material needed to keep the squadron’s aircraft operational and mission-ready.

AK personnel identified, ordered, received, inspected, stored, inventoried, issued, and accounted for aircraft replacement parts, consumable supplies, components, hardware, lubricants, and maintenance materials; processed requisitions for urgently needed aircraft parts; researched stock numbers, part numbers, allowances, and supply availability using Navy supply publications and records; maintained squadron storerooms and inventories; tracked high-value and repairable aviation components; processed defective or repairable components for turn-in, repair, or replacement; maintained custody and accountability records; prepared shipping and receiving documents; packaged, preserved, and shipped aviation material; monitored outstanding requisitions and followed up on critical parts needed to return grounded aircraft to service; coordinated closely with Maintenance Control, work-center supervisors, and shipboard Aviation Support Division personnel to obtain required material; maintained supply records and reports; and followed Navy supply, hazardous-material, security, and inventory-control procedures.

During carrier deployments, AKs played an especially important role in supporting A-6E and KA-6D Intruder operations because a single unavailable component could keep an aircraft grounded, making efficient parts identification, procurement, inventory management, and rapid delivery to the maintenance work centers essential to squadron aircraft readiness.

Non-Aviation Ratings

In addition to our aviation specialties, we had non-aviation rating assigned to a squadron. Our Corpsman worked in the base hospital and when we went to sea, thery came with us and work in Medical. Ditto for our cooks (MS). They worked in the galley cooking.

US Navy Ratings: Navy Counselor (NC)

In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, a Navy Counselor (NC) was responsible for managing the squadron’s enlisted career-development and retention programs and helping sailors make informed decisions about their Navy careers.

NC personnel provided individual career counseling; explained reenlistment, extension, advancement, rating conversion, commissioning, education, and training opportunities; assisted sailors with reenlistment and career-development paperwork; maintained career counseling records and tracked personnel approaching their End of Active Obligated Service (EAOS); conducted reenlistment and separation interviews; advised sailors on advancement requirements, Navy schools, special-duty assignments, transfers, and career options; provided information concerning pay, allowances, benefits, educational programs, and retirement opportunities; coordinated with the squadron command career counselor, personnel office, chain of command, and Navy personnel organizations; assisted supervisors with career-development boards and retention efforts; distributed information about changes to personnel programs and regulations; prepared career and retention reports; and helped sailors understand the administrative requirements associated with transfers, reenlistments, separations, and retirement.

Within an A-6 squadron, the Navy Counselor supported officers and enlisted personnel across the Operations, Maintenance, Administrative, and Safety departments, helping the command retain experienced sailors while ensuring individual members understood the opportunities and requirements affecting their Navy careers.

US Navy Ratings: Yeoman (YN)

In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, a Yeoman (YN) — performed the administrative and clerical work necessary to keep the squadron functioning both ashore and during carrier deployments.

Yeomen typed, prepared, routed, filed, reproduced, and maintained official correspondence, messages, reports, instructions, notices, directives, evaluations, awards, fitness reports, personnel documents, and other command records; maintained correspondence files, personnel files, publications, directives, and administrative logs; prepared letters, memoranda, endorsements, transfer and separation paperwork, leave documents, and routine reports; handled incoming and outgoing correspondence and distributed official messages to appropriate departments; maintained command files and records-management systems; operated typewriters, word-processing equipment, copying machines, and other office equipment; scheduled appointments and meetings; maintained officer and enlisted administrative information; assisted with personnel transfers, promotions, awards, reenlistments, leave, and other administrative actions; prepared and maintained squadron instructions and notices; safeguarded sensitive or classified administrative material when authorized; supported the Commanding Officer, Executive Officer, Administrative Officer, department heads, and other squadron personnel; and ensured paperwork complied with Navy correspondence, security, records-management, and administrative regulations.

In an A-6E and KA-6D Intruder squadron, Yeomen provided the administrative backbone that allowed the command to manage hundreds of personnel, maintain official records, process correspondence and personnel actions, and conduct day-to-day squadron business at its home station and aboard deployed aircraft carriers.

US Navy Ratings: Personnelman (PN)


In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, a Personnelman (PN) was responsible for maintaining enlisted personnel records and processing the personnel actions affecting the officers and sailors assigned to the command.

PN personnel maintained and updated service records; processed transfers, receipts, separations, reenlistments, extensions, advancements, reductions, and changes in duty status; prepared and verified personnel documents; processed leave and liberty-related paperwork; maintained information concerning pay grades, time in service, obligated service, dependents, and duty assignments; assisted sailors with applications for Navy schools, special programs, rating changes, and advancement examinations; processed recommendations for awards and advancement within their assigned administrative responsibilities; prepared transfer and separation documents; assisted personnel approaching discharge or retirement; researched Navy personnel regulations and eligibility requirements; prepared personnel rosters, strength reports, and other manpower reports; tracked gains and losses to squadron manning; helped resolve discrepancies involving service records and personnel information; coordinated with the squadron Administrative Department, disbursing personnel, Navy personnel offices, and supporting Personnel Support Activities; safeguarded personal and official records; and provided sailors with information about benefits, entitlements, advancement, assignments, and other personnel programs.

In a 1980s A-6E and KA-6D Intruder squadron, PNs provided the essential personnel administration that helped the command account for its manpower and ensured that each sailor’s assignments, advancement, reenlistment, transfer, separation, and other career actions were accurately documented and processed.

US Navy Ratings: Hospital Corpsman (HM)

Often called “Doc,” it is the largest and most decorated rating in the Navy, spanning over 40 technical specialties in clinical, field, and combat environment.

In a U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack squadron, a Hospital Corpsman (HM) provided routine and emergency medical support to the squadron’s officers, aircrew, maintenance personnel, and other enlisted sailors at the home station and during aircraft-carrier deployments.

HM personnel evaluated and treated minor illnesses and injuries; provided first aid and emergency medical care for cuts, burns, fractures, eye injuries, heat stress, chemical exposure, and other aviation-maintenance or flight-deck injuries; checked vital signs and assisted medical officers with examinations and treatment; administered authorized medications, immunizations, and basic medical procedures under appropriate medical supervision; maintained medical supplies, first-aid equipment, and emergency kits; assisted with aviation accident and mass-casualty response; participated in emergency drills; maintained medical and immunization records; helped coordinate physical examinations, laboratory testing, referrals, and medical appointments; promoted sanitation, disease prevention, hearing conservation, occupational health, and general preventive-medicine practices; and provided immediate care until injured personnel could be transferred to a flight surgeon, shipboard medical department, or medical treatment facility.

When assigned in direct support of an A-6E and KA-6D Intruder squadron, Hospital Corpsmen worked closely with the squadron flight surgeon, Safety Department, aircrew, and maintenance personnel to help protect the health and readiness of the command during demanding flight operations ashore and aboard aircraft carriers.

US Navy Ratings: Mess Management Specialist (MS)


The U.S. Navy’s Mess Management Specialist (MS) rating evolved into the Culinary Specialist (CS) rating on January 15, 2004. Before it was called Mess Management Specialist (a title adopted in 1975), the job was known historically as Steward (SD) or Ship’s Cook.

MS personnel prepared, cooked, baked, portioned, and served breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special meals; followed Navy recipes and menus; prepared meats, vegetables, soups, sauces, breads, desserts, beverages, and other foods; operated galley equipment such as ovens, grills, steam kettles, mixers, slicers, and food-preparation machinery; maintained sanitary food-preparation and serving areas; cleaned and sanitized utensils, cookware, equipment, and workspaces; received, inspected, stored, rotated, and inventoried food supplies; maintained refrigerated, frozen, and dry-storage spaces; monitored food temperatures and followed sanitation and food-safety requirements; assisted with menu planning, portion control, food inventories, and meal-production records; accounted for provisions and helped minimize waste; set up and operated serving lines and dining facilities; supported officers’ messes and enlisted dining facilities as assigned; prepared meals during extended flight operations and irregular working hours; and followed Navy regulations governing food service, sanitation, supply accountability, and galley safety.

During an A-6E and KA-6D Intruder squadron deployment, MS personnel helped sustain the sailors and aircrew working long flight schedules and maintenance shifts, providing the meals and food-service support necessary to keep personnel fed and ready for continuous carrier operations.

US Navy Ratings: Boatswain’s Mate (BM)
